Between 2006 and 2025, nine censuses were conducted in Cayo Español de Afuera (Cayo Frances Wildlife Refuge, northeast of Villa Clara Province, Cuba) with the aim of documenting aspects related to seabird nesting colonies (Charadriiformes). Given the small size of the key, a census was conducted during each visit, recording the presence of bird species and their breeding status. The number of nests, as well as their composition was determined for each species. As a result of the study, it was possible to corroborate the importance of Cayo Español de Afuera for the reproduction of several colonial seabirds, mainly for the Laughing Gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) and the Bridled Tern (Onychoprion anaethetus), as well as the most important period during the breeding season. In 2010, a nest belonging to the American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) was found, which constitutes the second documented nesting record for the species, in chronological order. The results demonstrate the need to continue ecological studies and monitoring bird colonies in these critical areas, increasing sampling efforts during each breeding season, in order to gain a more profound understanding of the process, thus contributing to the conservation of the species involved. Monitoring efforts must be concentrated between the second half of May and the beginning of June, given a lack of resources for conducting samplings. El estudio de las colonias de aves marinas en el Archipiélago de Sabana-Camagüey es crucial debido a su importancia como área de reproducción y a las crecientes amenazas del desarrollo turístico. Entre 2006 y 2025 se realizaron nueve censos en Cayo Español de Afuera, ubicado en el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Cayo Francés, al noreste de la provincia Villa Clara, Cuba, con el objetivo de documentar aspectos relacionados con la colonia de aves marinas Charadriiformes que nidifica en el mismo. Dada su pequeña extensión, el cayo fue revisado en su totalidad durante cada visita, registrándose la presencia de especies de aves y su estado reproductivo. Para cada especie se determinó el número de nidos, así como su composición. Se pudo corroborar la importancia de Cayo Español de Afuera para la reproducción de varias aves marinas coloniales, destacándose el Galleguito (Leucophaeus atricilla) y la Gaviota Monja (Onychoprion anaethetus). El hallazgo de un nido de Ostrero (Haematopus palliatus) en 2010 representa el segundo registro de nidificación documentado para Cuba. Los resultados muestran la necesidad de continuar los estudios ecológicos y el monitoreo de las colonias de aves en estas áreas críticas, aumentando el esfuerzo de muestreo durante cada temporada reproductiva, en aras de un conocimiento más profundo del proceso, contribuyendo a la conservación de las especies involucradas. No obstante, también evidencian que ante recursos limitados, el esfuerzo de muestreo se debe concentrar en la segunda quincena de mayo y principios de junio. Inventory of threatened flora in the Bahía de Malagueta Wildlife Refuge Inventario de la flora amenazada en el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Bahía de Malagueta Fernández Ricardo, Alvaro Valdés Lao, José Angel Bonet Mayedo, Waldo Eduardo protected areas conservation Cuba Las Tunas floristic wealth áreas protegidas conservación Cuba Las Tunas riqueza florística One of the main problems currently facing the Bahía de Malagueta Wildlife Refuge is that information about the true richness of its threatened flora is scattered, as the only existing report was not based on sampling. This has hindered the implementation of effective conservation programs. Therefore, the objective of this research was to inventory the threatened flora present in the Bahía de Malagueta Wildlife Refuge. A floristic inventory was carried out, dividing the study area into strata. The threat category and distribution of each identified species were analyzed, as well as their possible uses. A total of 22 species with some threat category were identified; of these, 17 are new reports for the study area, and one is a new report for the province of Las Tunas. According to their distribution, three of the analyzed species are native and 19 are endemic, of which eight have a restricted distribution. The presence of one endemic fruit tree and three medicinal species is noteworthy. The results indicate that the richness of threatened flora found in the Bahía de Malagueta Wildlife Refuge is 17 species greater than that reported in the Red List of Cuban Flora for this protected area, and that five of the analyzed species are priorities for conservation, and that four threatened plant species of economic interest are present in the study area. Uno de los principales problemas que enfrenta el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Bahía de Malagueta en la actualidad es que la información sobre la riqueza real de su flora amenazada se encuentra dispersa, debido a que el único reporte existente no fue basado en muestreos. Esto ha dificultado la implementación de programas de conservación efectivos. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de esta investigación fue inventariar la flora amenazada presente en el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Bahía de Malagueta. Se realizó un inventario florístico donde se dividió el área de estudio en estratos. Se analizó la categoría de amenaza y distribución de cada especie identificada, así como sus posibles usos. Se identificaron un total de 22 especies con alguna categoría de amenaza, de ellas 17 son nuevos reportes para el área de estudio y una es un nuevo reporte para la provincia de Las Tunas. Según su distribución tres de las especies analizadas son nativas y 19 son endémicas, de las cuales ocho presentan una distribución restringida. Se destaca la presencia de un frutal endémico y tres especies medicinales. Los resultados indican que la riqueza de la flora amenazada encontrada en el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Bahía de Malagueta es mayor por 17 especies a la reportada en la Lista Roja de la Flora de Cuba para esta área protegida y que cinco de las especies analizadas son prioritarias para la conservación, además en el área de estudio se encuentran cuatro especies vegetales amenazadas de interés económico. Using high-resolution satellite data (European Space Agency, Sentinel-2) and geospatial processing techniques, a detailed representation (1:25000) is generated, enabling applications in coastal management, ecological conservation, and land use planning. The vector analysis (with 94% overall accuracy) provides an estimate of the Cuban archipelago’s surface area (109887.43 km2) very similar to the country’s official figure. However, the estimated length of Cuba’s coastline (8517.67 km) differs from the 5746 km reported by the National Office of Statistics and Information for over a decade. Se presenta un modelo vectorial actualizado de la línea de costa de la República de Cuba, diseñado para mejorar la precisión y compatibilidad de la cartografía temática ambiental. A partir de fuentes satelitales de alta resolución (Agencia Espacial Europea, Sentinel-2) y técnicas de procesamiento geoespacial, se genera una representación detallada (1:25000) que permite aplicaciones en gestión costera, conservación ecológica y planificación territorial.
